Today, it is possible to purchase home protection systems that vary markedly. Some alarm systems consist only of door and window contacts. Door and window contacts work quite simply – they are small, two part devices that activate an alarm when separated from one another. So, if one part is installed on the door jamb and the other is installed on the door itself, the alarm will typically be tripped if the door is opened.

However, such devices are fallible, and an experienced burglar can disarm them, often in seconds. In such cases, if an intruder is successfully able to disarm the few contacts protecting the perimeter of the house, he will then have free and unfettered reign of the house and will, in short order, be able to deprive a homeowner of his valuables and possessions. Another type of protection offered by residential alarm companies is glass break detectors. Although these mechanisms are somewhat more high-tech than mere door and window contacts, they too have their drawbacks. Glass break detectors are really nothing more than sound, or decibel devices, that are set to be tripped if a certain frequency of sound is reached. This means that a teenager playing loud music of a certain decibel level or an item falling onto the floor can accidently trip the alarm and cause a false alarm.

Perhaps the best and most high tech method of home protection is the motion sensor alarm. A motion sensor alarm works by emitting infrared beams through a room or other area. If the beam is somehow compromised (by, for example, a burglar walking through the room), the burglar alarm will be immediately triggered and an alarm call will be sent to the central station that monitors the residence. In most cases, the motion sensors are not visible to the naked eye, so a burglar cannot obtain entry into a protected area and then pick and choose where he will go to avoid the sensors. Motion sensor alarms work perfectly in homes with pets, as various areas can be either included or excluded in the protection zone, and the zone can be set high enough so that a human being will trip the alarm, but not so high that a small pet will.
