The most expensive component to owning and maintaining a printer is the ink. Such so, that some printers use ink in their cleaning process or eliminate the option of the color black, otherwise known as Key, and combine the three other colors, most commonly, magenta, yellow, and cyan, to form a very muddy analogue to the color black. In short, this causes ink to run out almost as quickly as you purchase it. There are a few solutions to this however, the most prominent one being recycling ink cartridges. Many places will merely refill the cartridges with ink, using something that looks like an injector or a hypodermic needle. With this, you are saved the cost of the plastic housing and packaging of new cartridges. Secondly, there are discount cartridges that are generic, and not made by the original manufacturer of your printer or all-in-one device.

These tend to be significantly cheaper, such so, that they can be upwards of a tenth of a cost than the official cartridges. In some cases, these will not be of the best quality, but in many, these will be equal to, or better, than the manufacturer’s cartridges, which in reality, may be rebranded versions of the generics. Lastly, there is an option to purchase second hand cartridges. Some places will sell cartridges that have been filled with ink, but do not come from a manufacturer. This is a good idea as well. Cheap cartridges are out there, and in common places like pharmacies and grocery stores, you just have to be aware, and know what you are shopping for. If you do, you’ll save quite a few of those pretty pennies. Visit cheap printer ink cartridges or portable printer and scanner for more information.

For those unfamiliar, virtualization, from an information technology perspective, is essentially running a computer within a computer.  The computer that contains the virtual machine, the host, runs the VM, the guest, within its operating system just like any other application.  A lot of people hear that and they think that it’s just for geeks.  That’s a fair comment, I suppose, as it’s typically IT professionals who employ virtual environments for their testing, economic, and administrative benefits, however, virtual machines offer something that can benefit even the common user – the ability to surf the Internet virus free (within reason).

First, what you need is a computer that runs; though the faster the better, it doesn’t have to be bleeding edge (I host Linux VMs on a six year old Dell Dimension).  The next thing you need is a virtualization software package – preferably a free one.  The big boys in this realm are MS VirtualPC, VMWare, and Sun VirtualBox.  I prefer VirtualBox because I find it to be the most intuitive and resource efficient for our example’s simple needs.  It also has cross platform compatibility with Windows, Macs, Linux, and Solaris hosting operating systems as well.

Once you have the software installed on your computer, you need to download an operating system for your VM.  I recommend a lean (easy on your system resources), free OS with an intuitive graphical interface.  I prefer Xubuntu Linux for this because it requires very little horsepower to run, the Xubuntu VirtualBox video driver integration makes it look pretty enough, it’s totally free, and any basic Windows user can easily figure out how to browse the Internet with it.  Follow this link for detailed instruction on how to install Xubuntu on VirtualBox.

Once you complete the last step, you’re good to go.  What this means is now, whenever you want to surf the web (perhaps get into some of those virus-laden sites you know and love), you can do so without fear.  This is because virtual machines run independently from your host computer, so no virus or any other malware that infects your virtual is going to touch your main computer.  To beautify things a step further, VMs use saved states which allow you to restore your entire system in a matter of seconds to a clean state should you infect it…though it’s doubtful you will, as generally speaking, Linux suffers far less from malware than Windows does.

Again, you can’t go wrong surfing the web using this method.  It requires a small learning curve, but it’s safe, it’s free, and it won’t bog down your existing system.
